The upcoming Overwatch 2 mode is reminiscent of the classic era, bringing back a nostalgic feel that harkens back to its initial release. The new limited-time offering provides players an opportunity to engage with the original lineup and settings from 2016, creating a familiar yet refreshing experience.
Starting on Tuesday, November 12 at 9:15 am and running until December 2 at the same hour, players will have access to Overwatch Classic. This game mode can be found in both the Events Hub and the Arcade options from the main menu. Once players enter this mode, it will transport them back to the launch of Overwatch, complete with the original roster of 21 heroes, 12 maps, and 4 gameplay modes from its debut.
During the initial days of this mode, there will be no limitations on heroes or roles, allowing players to experiment with team compositions, whether that's one, two, or even six tanks forming a robust defense. Players can anticipate seeing multiple turrets on payloads or utilizing creative strategies to outmaneuver opponents in classic locations like Ilios. After this phase, a single hero limit will be instituted, categorizing all heroes into the four foundational classes: Offense, Defense, Tanks, and Supports.
In the nostalgic gameplay, familiar heroes will present unique challenges. For instance, Widowmaker will always remain a threat, and players should be cautious when navigating corners due to Hanzo’s potent arrow. Participants must also remain cautious of their own characters, as Junkrat and D.Va may inadvertently cause self-harm with their weapons. Strategically, Symmetra's teleporter adds an exciting dynamic, allowing players to return swiftly to the battlefield. Additionally, Mercy's ability to revive teammates instantly after a significant elimination can turn the tide of battle.
It’s important to note that while heroes will retain their original appearances and abilities, the game maps will reflect the updated Overwatch 2 versions. Therefore, players can expect significant alterations to classic maps such as Dorado, Numbani, Route 66, and Watchpoint: Gibraltar. Furthermore, gameplay mechanics like match timing and elevator platform functions will follow the rules set in Overwatch 2.
This classic mode is clearly differentiated from Overwatch 2's 6v6 experiment, which appears to be on track for more permanence in the game. The limited-time event is designed for fun rather than long-term implementation. However, this may not be a singular occurrence, as player reactions will be monitored to shape future offerings and adjustments to the game.
With its roguelike-inspired features gaining immense popularity, Overwatch 2 continues to evolve, catering to the experiences of players keen to revisit the roots while enjoying a modern twist.
